Please join us for FIGMENT Groundbreaking on April 6! It’s a wine reception and FIGMENT art preview in a gorgeous 4,000-sf Hell’s Kitchen loft. We’ll reveal the winning design of the 2011 City of Dreams Pavilion for the first time anywhere… We’ll also present featured FIGMENT art for 2011 (including the sculpture garden and minigolf course), talk about where FIGMENT is headed next, and share delicious hors d’oeuvres.

The event will feature a silent auction with original art by some of New York City’s finest artists in all imaginable mediums — from paintings to photographs; from jewelry to a custom metal mirror and a custom skateboard. We will also raffle a phenomenal gift bag that includes goodies from BAM, Kate Raudenbush, Marc Whalen, Andreas Keller, Ted Nemeth, Maria Hupfield, Robin Kline, Jen Upchurch, Chris Niederer and Annie Vainchenker. You may also to take away your own portrait drawn on the spot by Barnaby Ruhe, our in-house artist for the evening doing live portraiture. The evening’s proceeds will help make FIGMENT 2011 possible — so come ready to celebrate and promote an abundance of creativity!

New York City photographer Adrian Buckmaster shoots beautiful studio art in the day and then heads out in the evening to capture the many colors of nightlife. He has a knack for seeing the perfect moment, and because of this, his subjects appear as richly textured, complex people instead of one-dimensional models. Buckmaster lives his life fully and humbly, and the mirror of his camera allows us to enjoy this perspective in the environments he finds himself in.

Chris Niederer creates architecturally designed ultramodern home furnishings, exhibit design and art. Digital fabrication techniques (laser, CNC) allow the creation of striking and unique modular and biomimetic forms. Though trained as an architect, Chris’ interest in the multi-faceted world of experience design has led him to branch out, and work as an interactive artist, exhibit designer, information designer, branding strategist, and furniture designer, among other things. He is based in Brooklyn, NY.

Alex Roediger is a mixed media visual artist. He creates spontaneous, cartoon-inspired drawings and absurdist texts. With the help of digital tools he formalizes these into large scale paintings and collages. His work contains funny and surprising proclamations on anxiety, sexuality, relationships and mortality. He is a member of Dust Art Collective and is based in Brooklyn, NY.

Coffelt’s career began in the fashion industry designing clothing and fabric. His career as a painter was launched when Jim Mitchell commissioned him to paint over 100 works for the Parisian Department Store chain. In 1989 Coffelt received the “Outstanding Ten Year Alumnus Award” from Southern Institute. Coffelt was the inaugural artist at Space One Eleven when it opened in 1989 in Birmingham, Alabama. From 1994 to 1996, Coffelt served as editor and publisher of Alabama Art Monthly, a first-of-its-kind art magazine in the state. His work has been shown across the United States and in overseas exhibits.

Lindsey E. Shevkun is a visual artist, who primarily works with acrylic paints while incorporating a variety of mediums into her work. In addition, she currently serves as an art educator at an urban high school in New Jersey, where she spearheads the mural arts program she founded in 2008. Her formal training has roots on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean as she lived and trained in Rome, Italy as part of her undergraduate studies from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Photographer and creative director Marc Whalen has an award-winning career in media and commercial art. He has worked for publishing brands, such as Condé Nast, Hearst and Time Inc., as a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. Whalen is one of the sponsors of TEDxEAST. His work was acquired by the Library of Congress for their permanent archive. He has strong ties to the underground art scene in New York City, with a 22-year exploration of street art and the NYC nightlife. “The ultimate accomplishment of a successful creative project is when the outcome inspires more creativity.”

Molly Crabapple is an artist and comics creator (New York), known for her hyper detailed, Victorian inspired style. Katherine Gressel and Jeremy Reed co-designed and built “Pallet City” for the 2010 FIGMENT Terrace season?long sculpture garden. This piece was taken directly from the Pallet City gallery and was done with audience participation on the FIGMENT NYC 2010 opening weekend. The artists hung blank pieces of tyvek paper in vintage frames and attached magic markers to the frames. Visitors were prompted with the question, “What is your idea of an ideal city?”, leading to this creative graffiti expression.

Katherine Gressel is a Brooklyn-based artist and curator, who currently serves as Programs Manager at Smack Mellon Gallery in DUMBO and has taught and led community arts projects in a variety of settings.

Xtina Carbone is an auteur of the creative underworld. Classically trained in fine art, she broke free of traditional painting in favor of multi-dimensional performance art and fashion, bringing together her skills in costume construction, choreography, sound editing and multi-media installations. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2007, she has transferred these creative energies onto the stage once again with fire performance, belly dancing, and performance art direction with Scorch (2010) and debonair burlesque duo The Penny Treats. Her current work consists mainly of paintings in both oils and acrylics.

Potter Dana Riseberg and Barrie Cline collaborate on unusual ceramic vessels, pushing their functionality and equilibrium to the limit and maintaining an interesting tension between the divisions of craft and art. Artist: Wouter van Buuren

Wouter van Buuren makes photographic collages of landscapes and objects. He is particularly interested in the way we experience space. By merging multiple pictures into one large image he creates new spaces. Since 2006 Wouter has been creating ‘total landscapes’ in which multiple pictures visualize an entire scenery. To achieve this he climbs onto and then photographs from electricity towers, cranes, high rise buildings and bridges. Van Buuren lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Chassy Cleland weaves together multiple stories out of history and mythology, with a goal of creating new insights. Chassy Cleland was creator of The Watch and The Cave, honoraria installations in 2008 and 2009. Recently, he also created an installation for FIGMENT in NYC, and joined the Circle Arts Board of Directors.
